Ingredients

For the Turkey Patties
  • 1 lb ground turkey 93% lean recommended
  • 2 tbsp jerk seasoning store-bought or homemade
  • 2 green onions thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • olive oil for grilling
For the Spicy Jalapeño Slaw
  • 2 cups shredded green cabbage
  • 1 large jalapeño seeded and finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro chopped
  • 2 tbsp lime juice freshly squeezed
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 ripe Hass avocado sliced, for serving
For Assembly
  • 4 burger buns sourdough or whole wheat
  • optional pepper jack cheese slices
  • optional red pepper flakes for extra heat

Method

Prepare Patties
  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, jerk seasoning, sliced green onions, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined; do not overwork.
  2. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions. Shape each into a patty about 3/4 inch thick. Press a slight indent in the center of each patty to help them cook evenly.
Grill Patties
  1. Preheat a grill or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly brush the grates or pan with olive oil.
  2. Place the patties on the grill and cook for 5 to 6 minutes per side, or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center registers 165°F (74°C). If adding cheese, lay a slice on each patty during the last minute of cooking.
Make Slaw
  1. In a medium bowl, toss together the shredded cabbage, chopped jalapeño, cilantro, lime juice, olive oil, and salt. Taste and adjust seasoning if desired.
Toast Buns and Assemble
  1. While the patties rest, lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster.
  2. Place each patty on a bun bottom. Top with a generous spoonful of spicy jalapeño slaw and a few slices of avocado. Add the bun top and serve immediately with any extra slaw on the side.

Notes

For a milder slaw, remove all seeds and membranes from the jalapeño. To keep patties moist, avoid pressing them with a spatula while cooking. Leftover cooked patties can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in a skillet. Make the slaw up to 2 hours ahead and keep chilled. Serve with sweet potato fries or a crisp green salad for a complete meal.
